What are satellite phones?

Satellite phones are similar to cellular phones but operate using a satellite signal as opposed to land cellular towers. This makes a satellite phone available in hard-to-reach areas that have no cellular coverage but are withing line-of-sight of the satellite. They are meant to be operated outdoors, and are mostly used for emergency and maritime communications.

How do I know which satellite phone to choose?

This depends on mainly two factors: 1. Where you will be using the phone, as satellites coverage can vary depending on the part of the globe you are. 2. How you will use the phone, meaning do you need it for emails, data, or just emergency voice calls. These are the two main deciding factors when choosing which phone and plan to get.

I just need the phone for a trip/mission, can I rent a phone instead of buy?

Which service plan should I get?

That will depend on many factors... are you buying or renting a phone? Do you prefer a monthly, annual or prepaid plan? Depending on your preferences and area of usage, you can choose the right plan for you, and most providers offer monthly or annual plans. 

How much does an international call cost?

A satellite phone is different than cellular because it does not incur roaming fees. You can use your satphone to call a landline or cellular anywhere in the world for the same cost.

How much does it cost to receive a call or text message?

Incoming calls and texts are free with any service plan from VIDA.

How much does it cost to call a satellite phone?

That will depend on the operator fees from the person calling.

How do I make or receive a call on a satellite phone?

You need to turn on the device and put the antenna up. The antenna should have an 80% view of the sky. Press the number you want to call, including country and area code, then press send. To answer a call, the phone must be on and the satellite antenna up.

How do I use the internet or send an email on a satellite phone?

If you purchase a plan with data, you can connect your phone to your computer using the cable provided, install the software, then browse the web like you normally would with Wi-Fi. Please note that data and speed will be limited to your plan option. How long does it take for me to get the phone? Depending on the shipping method you choose and where you are located, you can have your phone as fast as 24 hours. Contact us for rush orders.
